‘Toxicology Research Grant’ helpt project eetbare folie realiseren

26 april 2018

Researchers at the University of Otago are working on an edible film using zein and chitosan (by-products of corn and seafood industries, respectively) and poly-vinyl alcohol (PVA) (a water soluble polymer which is commonly used as an additive for food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications). They have been working to blend zein, chitosan and PVA to create a film with good mechanical and barrier properties, and at a low cost. The project is at the “proof of concept” stage.
The project was one of four recipients of Toxicology Research Grants last year. The researchers applied for a Toxicology Grant to investigate the toxicity of the films (Nieuwsbericht University of Otago, 8 maart 2018).
