Israël: Supermarktketens gaan gratis herbruikbare tassen distribueren

30 september 2014

Israel's largest supermarket chains have taken a first step toward ending the free distribution of plastic bags at their stores. In August 2014 supermarket representatives met with Environmental Protection Minister Amir Peretz to sign an agreement to start giving out reusable bags at supermarkets for free. Peretz has proposed a bill that, if passed, will eventually obligate supermarkets to charge customers for plastic bags.
According to the agreement, reusable bags will be distributed in two rounds over a one year period. Each household will receive coupons for seven bags. The supermarket chains will fund the distribution (Nieuwsbericht Israel Ministry of Environmental Protection, 25 augustus 2014).
