The ability of the cigarette beetle to infest wheat flour under packaged and unpackaged conditions was investigated by researchers at the Henan University of Technology in China. Five packaging materials, namely, vacuum plastic bags, kraft paper bags, nonwoven cloth bags, aluminum foil bags, and woven plastic bags, were investigated.
The highest infestation was observed in flour packaged in nonwoven cloth bags. For flour packaged in kraft paper bags no insect infestation was observed or the infestation was negligible. For flour packaged in aluminum foil bags and vacuum plastic bags there was no insect infestation. An article about the research is published in the Journal of Food Protection.
