BR: Verbod op EPS foodverpakkingen in de maak

27 augustus 2015

In July 2015 the bill PL 2293/2015 was introduced in the Camara Dos Deputados (House of Representatives). The bill would ban the use of polystyrene foam (expanded polystyrene foam or EPS) for packaging for fresh or processed food and thermal cups for hot drinks in all commercial establishments in Brazil. Instead, such food packaging would be made from waxed or plastic-coated cardboard and would need to display appropriate recycling symbols.
According to the justification section of the bill, Brazil consumes about 36,600 tons of EPS packaging annually. The bill is awaiting assignment to committees and would take effect 90 days after it is approved (Recycling Laws International, 10 juli 2015).
