Finalist De Gouden Noot 33rd edition Kælt

Kælt by The Royal NNZ Group bv

Kælt is a packaging concept developed for delicate soft fruits such as blueberries, where effective and consistent cooling is important for maintaining product quality throughout the supply chain.

The concept combines a tray with an integrated air distribution plate designed to guide cold air more evenly through the packed fruit. By improving airflow between the different layers, Kælt helps create a more consistent temperature profile during precooling and supports effective temperature management during storage and transport.

This is particularly relevant for soft fruit, where differences in temperature within a packed load can affect freshness, firmness and shelf life. The challenge does not end once the fruit has been cooled. During transport, products may spend many hours or even days in transit before reaching a distribution centre or retailer. Maintaining the right conditions throughout that journey is therefore an important part of protecting product quality.

For growers, packers and retailers, the value lies in combining packaging with the cooling and logistics process rather than considering the tray as a standalone component. The design supports efficient airflow while remaining compatible with existing packing, transport and logistics systems.

By helping to maintain product quality throughout storage and transport and reducing the risk of food loss, Kælt can contribute to both economic and environmental objectives. It demonstrates how packaging design can play a role beyond product containment, by supporting the conditions a sensitive product needs from packing through to its final destination.
