Finalist De Gouden Noot 33rd edition Just Eat, Huhtamaki & Xampla’s Plastic-Free Morro™ Coated Box

Just Eat, Huhtamaki & Xampla’s Plastic-Free Morro™ Coated Box by Xampla

This takeaway box, manufactured in the UK by Huhtamaki, uses Xampla's plastic-free Morro™ Coating made from natural plant polymers, representing a breakthrough in single-use packaging.

The box made from responsibly sourced FSC-certified fluted, corrugated cardboard and coated with a plastic-free Morro Coating recently validated plastic-free by the National Physical Laboratory. This box has been designed to be home compostable (EN13432 pending), while delivering high grease, water and oxygen resistance without fossil-based plastics or PFAS.

This box is more than packaging, it's supporting Just Eat's commitment to reducing plastic waste while meeting consumer demand for high-performance sustainable alternatives. Its exemption from the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) strengthens its position as a compliant, forward-looking solution, enabling restaurants, cafés, and takeaways to adopt a practical alternative without sacrificing quality. By offering a high-performance plastic-free alternative, the box encourages and makes it easy for businesses and consumers to move away from plastic-lined containers.

This corrugated takeaway box has excellent grease resistance and is ideal for high-pressure hot food and delivery environments. The coating provides a Kit 12 grease resistance rating, and strong water and oxygen barrier performance, without the use of PE, PLA, or PFAS. The box is produced using conventional equipment, with no requirement for new machinery or process modifications. It is compatible with existing recycling streams as tested under the CEPI 4evergreen protocol (99.5% fibre yield) and is currently undergoing EN13432 certification for compostability.
