Finalist De Gouden Noot 33rd edition BISPENSER THE FIRST 100% PAPERBOARD SALTSHAKER

BISPENSER THE FIRST 100% PAPERBOARD SALTSHAKER by Tacom SA
Every year, billions of traditional rigid plastic salt shakers are manufactured worldwide, but their limited versatility, prohibitive logistics costs, and mounting environmental impact call for a smarter alternative.
Tacom developed BISPENSER: the first 100% FSC paperboard integrated shaker system for folding cartons. Designed as a complete ready-to-use solution, it features two pouring modes on the same carton: controlled shaker flow for table use and generous flow for cooking. The result is a genuine, customizable mono-material pack with a significantly reduced carbon footprint. Shipped flat before filling, BISPENSER reduces storage and transport volume by a factor of 10 to 20, cutting logistics costs by at least 90% and overall cost price by 50% compared to plastic jars.
Constructed from water-repellent FSC paperboard without chemical treatments, it ensures food safety and moisture resistance. Unlike injection-moulded plastic lids – whose modification is prohibitively expensive – adjustments to paperboard tooling, including tamper-evident seals and pouring holes, are simple and cost-effective. The folding spouts are applied seamlessly into existing filling lines at up to 220 cpm (400 cpm for saltshaker-only function). The square format offers four large surfaces for branding, with an optional bioplastic window. Refillable design is also possible.
Rather than forcing paperboard to mimic plastic – which is technically unfeasible – Tacom embraced its natural behavior, turning a global waste issue into a responsible, scalable and future-ready solution.
