TOPICS:
10 years of PUMA: past – present - future
The PUMA Project is the collective effort of the packaging business community to end packaging as an environmental issue worldwide. Packaging has been with mankind already since ancient times; however, the 20th century has brought a dramatic acceleration. The world now packs at least 320,000 products each second, resulting in as many emptied packs later in time and at a different location. This has caused substantial environmental concerns. As a packaging business community, we will only keep our societal license to operate if these concerns are properly addressed. A presentation will be given to share an overview of events; the major achievements of PUMA in the past 10 years, the present situation, and the expectations for the coming 10 years.
Legislation & Regulations update
The EU regulation (PPWR) will push the entire value chain toward packaging prevention, reuse, full recyclability, increased recycled content, and clearer labelling. In this presentation, an update will be given on this legislation, its targets, as well as a summary and findings of the 10 June and 4 November 2025 PUMA-project member meetings dedicated to this topic.
Recycled content: Availability, Quality and Safety (AQS)
Increasing the use of recycled materials (especially plastics) is a major goal, but supply is limited, recycled material is more expensive than virgin plastics and the quality of recycled material vary. Food-contact applications are particularly challenging. Speakers from the Packaging producing industries (producers and packaging fillers) will present how their companies are contributing to increasing the recycled content in packaging and the challenges they are facing.
Break-out sessions / workshops
After the presentations, the meeting will be interactive. Live participants will break out in groups to discuss the main challenges that their Employer or Company is facing to make their packaging more sustainable, e.g. by packaging prevention, reuse, full recyclability, increased recycled content, and clearer labelling. Participants will discuss the implications to packaging in the next 10 years.
Debate – Q&A’s – Panel discussion
One member of each working group will present the findings of their group. A panel of speakers/experts will share their expertise on the topics discussed and answer questions.
Summary, wrap-up and PUMA scope and actions 2026-2036
Collectively, we will define the topics to work on within the scope of the PUMA project and with an outlook on the coming ten years.
After-party with informal talks and drinks
Opportunity to meet participants and speakers / Networking / Socializing
