NVC Professional Lecture Innovation in food packaging: a French view

This NVC Actualiteitencollege (NVC Professional Lecture) is presented by Soazig Le Guy and four other master-students from the reknowned French École Nationale Supérieure d'Agronomie et des Industries Alimentaires (INSAIA). NVC is hosting a business trip of this group and an accompanying member of scientific staff in The Netherlands. 

The food industry in France is the primary business. To maintain its reputation, the French food industry must focus on innovation and customer expectations. Fundamentally, innovation in food is directly linked to innovation in packaging. More than just protection for the product, packaging plays a crucial role in support, transportation, communication and utilization.      

The European packaging sphere has long understood the necessity to generate and communicate innovation in packaging, and has acted accordingly (for example, at special events like fairs, conferences, competition or lecture). This presentation will deal with European innovation in food packaging related to business outlook and customer concerns.  

At first, an overview will be given of the economical aspects of food packaging in Europe. Crucial is understanding the customer’s perceptions and the necessity to stay connected to innovation.

Secondly, a review of the main innovations in 2009 will be given. These include Ecofass CG and RFID in transport and logistics, biomaterial-based packaging (sustainability), customer well-being in relation to food safety and nutrition and promising new trends like Luxe co-branding, miniaturization and ‘back to authenticity’.

In conclusion, the presentation will show how these innovations can offer perspective and fit to customer expectations. Participants to the lecture will receive a document serving as a portfolio for all innovations presented.
